Description: The Netflix phenomenon “13 Reasons Why” has sparked lively conversations about mental health and suicide, prompting schools across the country to have frank discussions with their students. This webinar highlights mental health issues that arise as a result of or in relation to the college application process. Clinical psychologists share their experiences working with teens who seek therapy in their senior year due to issues of anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and dependency brought on by this upcoming life stage transition. NACAC President Nancy Beane has long advocated for increased support of mental health services in schools. During her term as NACAC president, she has spoken out forcefully and regularly on the need for more and better resources for counselors who, in the course of their jobs, support the emotional well-being of students.
Presenters: Jo-Ann S. Finkelstein, PhD, Clinical Psychologist (IL)
